PRACTICE TIPS #34: Practicing in Sections, part 3: Quiz Time!

--------------------------------------------------------------------

In the previous two issues of Practice Tips, I have been talking about how

to practice in sections, which should be the primary practice method you use.

Now it's time for a little quiz to see how much you remember. First try to

answer the questions without looking at your old issues of Practice

Tips. If you try and still can't remember the answer(s), then go back and

re-read the last two issues, then try again.

[NOTE TO MY OWN STUDENTS: Yes, I do expect you to answer the quiz and email

me your answers. Yes, it will count as part of your grade.

NOTE TO THOSE WHO AREN'T MY STUDENTS: I'd love to receive your answers,

too, and if it helps to pretend like it will count as part of your grade,

please do . . . ]

Quiz Questions

--------------

   1. What is the *minimum* standard you should use in deciding whether you

have played a particular section perfectly (Hint: There are 3 items that

*must be* correct.)

   2. Approximately how much time should you spend practicing one practice

section before moving on to a new section?

   3. What is the most common mistake students make when dividing their

pieces into practice sections?

   4. Why is this (mistake referred to in question #3) such a bad

mistake? What "bad things" will happen if you make this mistake (or "good

things" happen if you *don't* make the mistake)?

Happy Practicing!

PRACTICE TIPS is by pianist, teacher, composer, and internet nerd

Brent Hugh. Brent knows about practicing mostly because he *does*

it, and in fact is toddling off to do some of it just about now . . .

Please remember that this tip is but a small spot near the tip of the

elephant's trunk--it's not even close to the whole elephant that is

"how everyone in the whole world should practice the piano".
