PRACTICE TIPS #30: Starting to Work on a New Piece, part 2

----------------------------------------------------------

Last time I mentioned three ideas for starting to work on a new piece:

  1. WHOLE WORK: Get an overview; sight read; don't waste time.

  2. LARGE/MEDIUM SECTIONS: Notice natural sections (phrases and larger).

  3. SMALL "PRACTICE SECTIONS": Mark them in the music.

Here is a another "must" when starting to practice a new work:

  4. FINGER POSITIONS/FINGERING: Before starting work on a Practice

Section, decide on the finger position(s) or fingering needed

for that section. With a pencil, mark the fingering in the

music, so that you will use the same fingering every time, using

     one of these methods:

     * Bracket notes that lie within a single finger position

     * Write in finger numbers--enough to remind you of your fingering

     * Use pre-printed fingering (found in many piano books) BUT:

          - Change fingerings awkward for you, and *write* these

            changes in your music

          - Circle fingers you are prone to miss

          - Write in any extra finger numbers YOU need in order to

play with a consistent fingering each and every time

Next time: More on starting a new piece.

Happy Practicing!

PRACTICE TIPS is by pianist, teacher, composer, and internet nerd

Brent Hugh. Brent knows about practicing mostly because he *does*

it, and in fact is toddling off to do some of it just about now . . .

Please remember that this tip is but a small spot near the tip of the

elephant's trunk--it's not even close to the whole elephant that is

"how everyone in the whole world should practice the piano".
